With the city of Milan recently confirmed as hosts of the 2016 Champions League final Barbara Berlusconi, joint CEO of AC Milan and daughter of former owner Silvio Berlusconi, has indicated that their San Siro home has to be refurbished if it is to help them club progress.

Ms Berlusconi met with Inter president Erick Thohir on Thursday to discuss how they can improve the facilities for both clubs using the stadium, particularly under the current restraints by not owning it outright.

“It is a wonderful stadium, which holds the distinguished story of AC Milan and Inter, but today that is no longer enough,” Berlusconi told Mediaset.

“Stadiums require different services to different infrastructures to remain open seven days a week and not only on the day of the game.

“Unfortunately, today in Italy there are many difficulties, like support from the state, the region and the municipality.

The 30-year-old then began to focus on the issues at large within Italian football as a whole suggesting that a complete overhaul was required to be considered the pinnacle of European football once more.

“The main problem of our football is the litigation,” she continued. “All owners should worry about how to promote it in Europe and in the world, but today we lose too much time to quarrelling.

“I believe that our problem is a little with what is going on in a little in Italy as a whole, to a country that does not want to overhaul.

“Even in football it seems to me that we protect many positions, many roles, and that the desire to remain anchored to their seats prevail over the need for improvement.

“You have to be like Germany, when in 2000 they were very disappointed after failing at the European [Championships], they were able to change the governance, rules, men, stadiums and accounts and not only at national level but in all clubs.”
