After Fiorentina officially announced the signing of 25-year-old Croatian Milan Badelj from Bundesliga side Hamburg, former national team captain and AC Milan legend Zvonimir Boban has questioned the move, insisting he is too similar to current pair David Pizarro and Borja Valero.

Last season, the Viola lit up Serie A with some stunning midfield displays with Alberto Aquilani often joining the duo as they chased a Champions League place, however, although the former Rossoneri mans remarks indicate that someone will have to make way for Badelj.

“Milan Badelj is a complete midfielder, but he cannot play along with Pizarro and Borja Valero, as he is very similar,” Boban told Sky Sport Italia.

“Perhaps he is more defensive, with great technique, even if not very fast.

“The boy is mature, very serious.”

Last season the midfielder made 29 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburg as they narrowly avoided relegation, scoring just once.
