CagliariCagliari welcome Atalanta to the Stadio Sant’Elia in their first home match of the Serie A season, with both coaches hoping for improved displays after their opening fixtures.

The Sardinian side emerged successful from this fixture last season, as former player Radja Nainggolan steered the Rossoblu to a 2-1 victory on the opening day of the 2013/14 campaign.

Both of Cagliari and Atalanta claimed draws last weekend to kick off this season, and while La Dea’s stalemate against Verona was hard-earned, Cagliari were somewhat lucky to take a point from Sassuolo.

It’s still way too early in the season to make judgements, but the two sides may have fallen short of a transfer window which could have been considered successful.

However, Atalanta new-boy Alejandro Gomez is expected to make his debut for Stefano Colantuono’s side, having been bought from Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv for 5 million to replace star player Giacomo Bonaventura.

Excluding the introduction of Gomez, the away side’s team will most likely be unchanged, as they look to capitalise on an encouraging display last time out.

The home side are on their own in having injury concerns, after Sebastian Eriksson returned from the international break with a knee ligament injury expected to keep the player out until January at least. Daniele Dessena is doubtful for this match, but coach Zdenek Zeman will have been boosted by forward Victor Ibarbo’s return to the fitness, with the Colombian expected to earn a place on the bench.

The game looks destined for a straight battle between Cagliari’s attacking verve and Atalanta’s defensive solidarity, but with the season still in its infant stages anything could happen.

Expected Starting XIs

Cagliari – Colombi; Pisano, Ceppitelli, Rossettini, Avelar; Ekdal, Conti, Crisetig; Cossu, Sau, Farias

Atalanta – Sportiello; Zappacosta, Benalouane, Biava, Drame; Estigarribia, Carmona, Cigarini, Gomez; Moralez, Denis
