Fiorentina were held by a stubborn 10-man Genoa side to a goalless draw as Vincenzo Montella’s side continue to search for their first win and first goal of the new season in Serie A.

The La Viola dominated possession for most periods but were unable to crack open a stubborn Rossoblu side.

Even the sending off of defender Facundo Rocaglia could not aid Fiorentina in finding a goal as Juan Cuadrado, Alberto Aquilani and Borja Valero missed chance after chance.

Fiorentina

Norberto Neto – 6 – Tourist

The La Viola goalkeeper pretty much had nothing to do the whole game other than stand in the sun and pray that his side score a goal from somewhere.

Nenad Tomovic – 7 – Workhorse

The Serb was a constant presence on the right wing, assisting the front men whenever possible and nullifying the threat of the Genoa front three.

Stefan Savic – 7 – Comfortable

The former Manchester City man was hardly troubled just like his fellow compatriots in defence, and had a pretty quiet game.

Gonzalo Rodriguez – 6 – Bystander

If the only thing Savic had to do was move a muscle, Rodriguez did not even feel the urge to do so. He was literally unmoved towards what Genoa had to offer in attack.

Marcos Alonso – 7 – Lively

Perhaps the most active amongst the Fiorentina back four, Alonso made sure that Genoa’s Diego Perotti had a nightmare of a game and he even came close to scoring in the second half.

David Pizarro – 7 – Orchestrator

The former Roma midfielder was the focal point for most of the attacks of the La Viola as he played with enthusiasm and focus.

Borja Valero – 7.5 – Entertaining

Valero tried his best to put his side in front but he simply lacked the killer instinct in front of goal. However, the 29-year-old produced some beautiful short passes and long balls to engage the crowd.

Alberto Aquilani – 6 – Wasteful

Had two wonderful chances to score after the interval, however he shot straight at Mattia Perin to further extend his side’s agony.

Juan Cuadrado – 6 – Naive

Although the audience were witness to some of Cuadrado’s excellent dribbling skills, the Columbian should really improve on his decision making if his side are to depend on him for creating and scoring goals.

Khouma Babacar – 5 – Missing

Apart from a macho build and some rough and tough play, Babacar did very little compared to his team mates.

Mario Gomez – 5 – Unlucky

Substituted early in the second half, the only chance that came the German’s way was an easy header early on in the match which he mistimed.

Substitutes

Federico Bernardeschi – 4 – Anonymous

Came on for Gomez in the second half and this young promising talent had perhaps the best chance of the game to score and become a Florence hero. Other than that, he was nowhere to be seen.

Manuel Pasqual – N/A

Played the last 10 minutes or so and had very little time to help his team.

Josip Ilicic – 4 – Disappointing

Failed to produce the quality which he did against Roma in the last round and was largely left frustrated.

Genoa

Mattia Perin – 8 – Impenetrable

The Genoa shot stopper made two world class saves at the climax of the game and turned in a man of the match performance to prevent his side from losing three points.

Sebastian Di Maio – 6 – Focused

Di Maio grew in confidence as the game progressed, not allowing any of the Fiorentina front line to get the better of him.

Nicolas Burdisso – 7 – Brilliant

Made an excellent interception in the second half to deny Valero a one-on-one chance with Perin and displayed good authority throughout.

Facundo Roncaglia – 8 – Determined

Although he was sent off with 18 mins to go, one of the main reasons Genoa were not a goal down by then was him as he made block after block to deny the home side any chance on goal whatsoever.

Luca Antonelli – 7 – Commanding

The 27-year-old lead the Genoa midfield and did a solid job. He had a much better second half and kept things tight at the centre of the park.

Andrea Bertolacci  – 5 – Nervy

Got himself booked in a very poor first half and was therefore substituted at half time for Tomas Rincon.

Stefano Sturaro – 6 – Dynamic

Sturaro was all over the place, helping the defence and also doing his best whenever Genoa did get forward.

Edenilson – 7 – Hard Working

Gave his best and sacrificed a lot for the team after they went down to 10 men.

Juraj Kucka – 6 – Creative

Kucka was perhaps the only Genoa player who was willing to attack and showed his class intermittently with a few neat twists and turns.

Mauricio Pinilla – 4.5 – Dormant

The Chile international hardly got any service from his teammates but went close with the one chance that fell to him before he got subbed.

Diego Perrotti – 4 – Hibernating

The man from Sevilla hardly posed a threat for the Fiorentina defence and was seen defending for most periods.

Substitutes

Tomas Rincon – 6 – Flawless

Came in for the liable Bertolacci in the second half and put a solid shift in the midfield, plugging the gaps and stopping Fiorentina’s flow.

Alessandro Matri – 4 – Poor

It seems Matri’s goal drought will continue for some time as the former La Viola man was seldom involved in the game.

Aleandro Rosi – N/A

Gian Piero Gasperini’s defensive substitution as he brought in a defender for an attacker.
