Manolo Gabbiadini’s brilliant free kick strike earned Sampdoria a 1-0 victory over Genoa in a the Derby della Lanterna on Sunday night.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate before the young striker hit the winner which led to rapturous celebrations with the fans.

“I celebrated wildly,” he exclaimed to Sky Sport Italia. “At the beginning of the season, we were not any good.  I was very angry.

“Now, I’m happy. Now, we scored a free-kick.  The first in a month or maybe all year.  It was time. It’s not just my skill, or just the skills of others.”

Sampdoria are now the only unbeaten side in Serie A alongside Juventus and Roma, and now sit in third place.

“Are Sampdoria the revelation of the league? No. We play game after game, aware of our quality and at the end of the season we’ll see where we get. The credit goes to all of us. We have a great group.

“We were tense, but it’s part of the history of the derby,” he went on to tell Mediaset Premium.

“I’m not interested in what triggered the goal. It was important to win.

“We aware of our abilities, we’ll play to win every match, and then we’ll see what we can do at the end of the season.”
