After his move to Benfica, AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani has said that midfielder Bryan Cristante asked the club to sell him.

The midfielder sealed a deadline day switch to the Portuguese club for a fee of roughly €6 million, leading to criticism from fans, the common consensus being that a loan deal would have been more viable.

According to Galliani, that was not an option. He told reporters: “Cristante asked to go because there are too many players [ahead of him].

“We would have liked him to stay and I tried to convince him but he wanted to leave. I suggested he go on a loan move to another Italian side but he said he did not want to play against Milan and so he has gone abroad.”

Galliani moved quickly to replace the Italian with Atalanta midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura who arrives on a five year contract.

The Diavolo supremo revealed: “He is a great player and a great man and was so happy when he signed that he cried.

“He is still young and has great human qualities as well as technical ability and it all happened very quickly after the [Jonathan] Biabiany situation.”
