Former Palermo striker Abel Hernandez has told reporters in Italy that the summer window was the right time for him to leave the club.

The 24-year-old completed a £10 million move to Hull City on transfer deadline day and went on to share his excitement at getting started in England having signed a three-year deal with the option of a fourth.

Speaking exclusively to TuttoMercatoWeb.com, Hernandez displayed no regrets over leaving Italy.

“The time had come for me to leave Palermo,” he stated. “I’d been there for about six years and I’d done everything.

“From the high points like our promotion and getting to the final of the Coppa Italia to lows like our relegation, I gave everything and the time was right for a change.”

He then went on to speak with excitement about the challenges ahead: “I can’t wait to get started. I’m going to work hard to get up to full fitness straight away.

“I’m grateful to Hull City for giving me this opportunity and I’m keen to repay the faith shown in me. I’m going to give my all to ensure that we fulfil our goals, the first of which is ensuring that we stay up.”

Later, while confirming that Benfica had also shown interest in his signature, Hernandez insisted that he was intent on sealing a move to England.

“There was an offer, yes, but the English league is the best in the world,” he enthused. “Playing in England has always been my dream and I want to show what I can offer.”

Finally, the Uruguay international provided his take on Palermo’s chances in Serie A: “Newly-promoted sides often run the risk of going straight back down but Palermo showed last season that they’re a good team.

“They have experienced players like [Stefano] Sorrentino and [Enzo] Maresca while [Paulo] Dybala and [Franco] Vazquez will be important to their chances.”
