Roberto Calenda, agent of Roma defender Maicon, has revealed that his client is continuing to give his all to the capital city club despite certain doubts about his qualities on and off of the pitch.

The 33-year-old was recently involved in a controversy while on international duty with Brazil which saw him make an early return to Italy, where he was also met with some negative criticism from Giallorossi fans, and has led many to believe that he will never be able to represent his country on the field again, though his agent insists that the former Inter man’s current situation has been improving.

Calenda spoke to GianlucaDiMarzio.com about the rumours surrounding his client and expressed Maicon’s willingness to do whatever it takes to help Roma succeed.

“It’s part of our world, but even more so at Roma,” said the agent. “Some situations are exasperated, doubting the qualities of a champion who has won everything is pretty weird, especially after an excellent season.

“Last year he joined Roma after a bad season at Manchester City, due to injuries. Some doubts were understandable, but the fact that they’re starting over now after what he did last season is incomprehensible.

“Those who have been questioning Maicon may have been doing it for other reasons, maybe that’s the explanation.

“He was acquired by Roma due to his ability to remain calm and help lead the team. Adding an experienced player who’s accustomed to winning to a team with great ambitions can only help a group that wants to grow.

“Maicon has proven to be strong and serene, and the issue with the national team is over. I still think the doors are open for him with Brazil. Everyone makes mistakes, these things happen.

“We can finally end the talk about the incident with Brazil. Maicon made a mistake and apologised, and the statement from Brazil hinted at who knows what. There was a pointless and inappropriate uproar.

“Now that this matter is over, he wants to give his all to Roma and prove that he can be stronger than the pressures and exasperations.

“It’s never easy, especially in Rome.”
