Manchester United are interested in signing Roma’s Kevin Strootman in January as they prefer to wait for the Dutchman to recover in order to bolster their midfield.

The club’s executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward has been assigned the task to offload several out-of-favour players before the 11pm transfer deadline on Monday even as Manchester United continue to monitor Strootman’s progress.

The Telegraph reports that Van Gaal has allocated around €30 million to acquire the services of the Dutch midfielder who won’t return to full fitness until November, after having suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March that forced him to the miss the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Dutch international was overlooked by former manager David Moyes before completing a €17 million move from PSV Eindhoven last summer and is thought to be keen to work with compatriot Van Gaal, under whom he became an integral part of the Holland side.
