After veteran midfielder Marco Marchionni left Parma for Sampdoria last week, he insisted that he has always been an admirer of the Genoa based club and admitted that when he discussed a potential move with Blucerchiati old-boy Antonio Cassano, he was told to grasp the opportunity with both hands.

At 34-years-old the ex-Juventus winger is unlikely to be patrolling the flanks anymore and is expected to feature in a central role for coach Sinisa Mihajlovic. bringing some vital experience to a side many feel should be looking at challenging for European qualification this term.

“I’ve always liked this club,” Marchionni told Tuttomercatoweb.

“Here is a young team, who last year did well and can always improve. I have a good relationship with Mihajlovic, otherwise I would not come here.

“With age it’s hard to play on the outside anymore so I play more in the middle. Mihajlovic has improved me in that role since our time of Florence.

“What has Cassano said of Sampdoria? If it is true… run there!”
