Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella has expressed his regret at his side’s wastefulness in front of goal in their 0-0 draw at home against Genoa.

The Viola were in total control for large parts of the game and registered 22 shots on goal but because Genoa defended so deeply it meant that all their possession counted for very little.

“I believe that we were better today than the end of last season,” the 40 year old former Italian international told Radio Rai. “But we were not decisive enough in the final third.

“With a little more creativity, we could have broken the deadlock.”

Montella also addressed the Mario Gomez situation after the German striker missed the best chance of the game and was substituted after an hour.

“We have full confidence in him [Gomez] and we believe that he can lift the rest of the team.”

Montella joined Fiorentina in 2012 and has led them to consecutive fourth placed finishes in Serie A.
