Bologna LogoA consortium including Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo are reportedly close to purchasing Bologna FC and are looking to finalize a deal as early as next week.

Current Bologna president Albano Guaraldi has been searching for a new owner as the Emilia-Romagna club is steeped in debt and have hired New York lawyer Joe Tacopina to help find a suitor.

Tacopina told the Corriere di Bologna that a group of five investors, including Saputo, has been assembled to purchase the club for under €19 million, much of which would be used to service the club’s debt.

Montreal and Bologna already share some history as three players, including Marco Di Vaio, have made their way overseas to play for the Major League Soccer franchise.

If the move comes to fruition, it could signal a return to the Rossoblu of former captain Di Vaio who has made no secret of his desire to return to the club in a managerial role.
