Former Watford coach Giuseppe Sannino believes the timing was right for him to leave the Championship side.

The former Chievo tactician’s resignation was greeted with shock, as his side had enjoyed four wins in the first five games of the season.

“I inherited a very talented team, and I am proud of what we achieved,” he said. “I have no doubt the team will win promotion to the Premier League.

“I gave my all for Watford – I gave my heart and soul and I’m glad I did. I received wonderful support from everyone, especially the fans. However, I feel I’ve given everything I can. For myself and for the club it’s the right time for me to leave.”

After finishing in 13th place last season, Sannino had guided the Hornets to second place in the table, however it is believed that difficulties adapting to life in Britain, and in learning English led to the resignation of the 57-year old, who also coached Palermo.

However, with Watford being owned by the Pozzo family – which also controls Udinese – it is believed the Italian connection may continue at Vicarage Road, with former Zebrette coach Francesco Guidolin among the favourites to take over the hotseat.
