Previously winless Catania snatched their first victory of the Serie B campaign for new coach Beppe Sannino in a 2-1 result at the Stadio Angelo Massimino over Pescara, and Lanciano and Bari shared the points at the Stadio Guido Biondi.

The Etnei were having difficulty navigating the rough waters of Serie B rough as the Sicilians were winless in their first five matches and had already fired Maurizio Pellegrino before appointing Sannino a fortnight ago.

The match began poorly for the Delfini when Emanuele Pesoli hacked down Alessandro Rosina in the area and the veteran striker did not miss his spot kick opportunity to put the hosts up top inside the opening two minutes.

The Rossazzurri controlled the next twenty minutes but were unable to add to their advantage and Pescara hit back as Federico Melchiorri received a through ball in the area, cut back nicely to create some space, and his left-footed shot was expertly placed past a diving Luca Anania to level the match.

The sides traded opportunities before Emanuele Calaio put Catania in the lead minutes into the second half, and despite some excellent chances from both clubs Catania held on even as Slovakian defender Norbert Gyomber was sent off in the match’s closing stages.

Meanwhile, the Serie B week ended with a 1-1 draw when Bari visited Lanciano on Monday night.

Neither side has yet hit their stride this season but that didn’t deter the hosts who put Bari under pressure from the opening whistle and then countered effectively all evening.

Lanciano’s trio of on-loan attackers chased down the Galletti defenders and were rewarded inside a quarter hour when Bari’s Antonio Donnarumma did well to block Gatto’s shot but the rebound floated nicely for Cerri who nodded it to put the Frentani up.

The visitors were unable to alter the scoreline but came agonizingly close just inside 40 minutes when captain Marino Defendi cut through the Lanciano defense and chipped Nicolas Andrade but was denied by the crossbar.

Bari leveled the match on the hour mark on Giuseppe De Luca’s brave header and the visitors nearly gained the winner twice in the next 15 minutes on headers from Michele Camprorese and Francesco Caputo but were denied on each occasion by Andrade.
