Perugia extended their lead atop the Serie B standings after registering a scoreless draw against Modena, their second successive draw, placing the Grifoni two points ahead of a trio of squads.

Goal mouth action was sparse on Tuesday night at the Stadio Alberto Braglia as only Perugia managed any shots on target (2) and Modena seemed content with keeping their defense compact and gutting out a point against a Perugia side brimming with confidence.

The second half opened up a little more as the visitors pressed, but Walter Novellino’s Canarini side held firm and offered even less in attack as the match continued.

Elsewhere, Pro Vercelli secured second place thanks to a stoppage time goal at the Stadio Tombolato to grant the Leoni a 2-1 victory over a hard luck Cittadella side.

Both sides pressed hard and Pro Vercelli found the breakthrough on an unfortunate bounce when Citta’s Michele Pellizzer’s attempted clearance clanged off a fellow defender to grant the visitors the lead before the half hour mark.

The hosts then nearly scored when Daniel Cappelletti’s header rattled the crossbar and Citta did not miss its next opportunity Massimiliano Busellato headed in the equalizer moments before the half time whistle.

Cittadella had at least four clear cut chances to take the lead but were unable to capitalize when Pro Vercelli’s Michele Ferri crossed a ball into the box and substitute Giacomo Beretta turned and hit a spectacular volley to send the Piedmontese club back home with their first road win of the campaign.

Trapani regret their 2-2 draw against a 10-man, bottom of the table Virtus Entella as the Sicilians had to level the match the twice in order to rescue a point and will rue the missed opportunity of sitting atop the standings with Perugia.

Entella certainly did not look like a side who had only gained a point through the season’s first four matches as they registered no less than four terrific opportunities before the Trapani keeper misplaced his goal kick directly into the path of Marco Sansovini who didn’t miss from just outside the box.

Trapani found the equalizer when Mateusz Lewandowski tripped Matteo Mancosu in the area for his second yellow and Mancosu buried the spot kick.

Sansovini netted his second on a beautiful left-footed free kick just outside the area and Trapani drew when Giovanni Abate beat two Entella defenders to a  cross and perfectly positioned his header.

Livorno picked up their first home victory in nearly six months as they downed Varese 1-0 on Daniele Vantaggiato’s first goal for his new club at the Stadio Armando Picchi, moving the Amaranti up to 8th place and providing a much needed boost of confidence for a side struggling after being relegated.

Pescara drew 1-1 with Latina as Federico Melchiorri beat his marker to a low cross and gave the hosts the lead inside of 10 minutes. However, the Delfini had a blackout moment near the 30 minute mark as the defenders let Latina’s Stefano Pettinari split them off a headed flick-on to level the match and the moment encompassed why Pescara remain winless.

Bologna nicked a 1-0 victory against previously unbeaten Ternana on the road on the strength of Greek defender Marios Oikonomou’s first goal and match with the Rossoblu.

Vincenza picked up its first victory by downing Bari 1-0 at the Stadio Romeo Menti on Antonino Ragusa’s headed goal 30 minutes into the second half.
