CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutsky has said that Roma were a strong opponent and he takes responsibility for the Russians losing in their opening UEFA Champions League fixture.

Slutsky’s side were thrashed 5-1 by Roma, and although he pointed out that Seydou Doumbia could have changed the game if he has scored, Slutsky has taken the blame for not preventing the humiliation.

“In fact, the match was lost in the first few minutes. We could not do anything to stop the opponent’s level of play,” Slutsky said in the post-match press conference.

“The team was not ready and here I blame himself. That is the man who in fact had to prepare them.

“Roma are certainly very strong. But we just could not catch hold of the game, for some of its fragments on any part of the field.

“Perhaps this episode could be the one-on-one Doumbia but unfortunately he did not. One may speculate as to why Seydou did not score but this time we realized, alas, it was not meant to be.”
