Genoa midfielder Stefano Sturaro has apologised to fans and those connected to the club after they were beaten 1-0 by rivals Sampdoria.

The Blucerchaiti snatched the win thanks to a late Manolo Gabbiadini freekick, which took them to third place in Serie A.

“I’m sorry for everyone [connected to the club] and the fans,” he lamented to Sky Sport Italia. “We did everything possible, but we conceded a bad goal.

“It meant that we have to work twice as hard to stand up, and try to get to the end of the match ahead of them.”

When asked about the Italian national team and whether or not he will be in Antonio Conte’s next squad, the midfielder insisted he is only focussed on one thing.

“I don’t know. For now, it is the least important thing. At the moment, I must think of Genoa and try to get the right results.

“The next few days will be tough, especially mentally.  But we are all strong guys, and together we will try to overcome this moment.

“In these situations it is difficult to be happy with the performance, because in this game [the Derby della Lanterna], only the results count. “
