FIGC president Carlo Taveccchio has celebrated UEFA’s decision to host the 2016 Champions League final in Milan’s Stadio San Siro.

It will be the first final in Italy since 2009 when Rome’s Stadio Olimpico hosted Manchester United and Barcelona and Tavecchio insists it will benefit the city of Milan and Italian football in general.

“Now that it’s official we can finally celebrate,” said Tavecchio on the FIGC’s official website.

“This is excellent news for Italian football, which has the ambition of returning to being a leading player in Europe.”

“The Champions League final, and in particular the economic impact, will be an extraordinary opportunity for the city of Milan.

“I am certain that the city’s council, that has for some time made major investments to improve the quality of life, upgrade and innovate the city- will know how to seize the opportunity that this sporting event brings.

“I want to thank my predecessor Giancarlo Abete, the city of Milan and its administrators, the M-I Stadio consortium, the clubs AC Milan and Inter and the staff at the FIGC who were committed to the bid.

“Thanks to intensive teamwork, we were able to achieve the goal we set ourselves.

“Allow me to finish with a wish: to be able to see at least one Italian team on the pitch that day.”
