Inter vice-president Javier Zanetti has claimed it is important that Inter won their first Europa League group game on Thursday night.

The Nerazzurri defeated Dnipro 1-0 in Kiev on Thursday, with a toe-poked finish from wing-back Danilo D’Ambrosio securing the points.

“The team now knows that all the matches in Europe are difficult,” Zanetti told Mediaset Premium.

“It was very important to start off on the right foot, but it is not the most important match of the round.”

The last time Inter played in Kiev was in 2009 when they secured a 2-1 victory over Dynamo Kiev with two late goals that saved them from elimination from their Champions League group.

Jose Mourinho’s side famously then went on to win the competition.

“I have fond memories, here in Kiev with Mourinho in the Champions League.

“That game was the first sign of a strong and united team. From there we went all the way to the end.”

The former Nerazzurri captain was also asked whether he would consider a return to training with the team.

“No, now I train alone, play with friends and I’m rooting for this team that is emerging. We hope it can still grow a lot.”
