AC Milan 1-1 Fiorentina: Ilicic salvages a point for La Viola

AC Milan and Fiorentina drew 1-1 at the San Siro on Sunday night in Serie A.

The Rossoneri took the lead courtesy of Nigel De Jong’s header, before Slovenian international Josip Ilicic tied the game with a left-footed strike.

The first real threat of the game came through Stephan El Shaarawy whose curled attempt was tipped over the bar by Neto, only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside.

The Rossoneri eventually took the lead minutes later when Cristian Zapata nodded the ball onto Nigel De Jong who then guided his header into the bottom corner.

Jasmin Kurtic attempted to make it 1-1, but his strike from distance went wide of the near post.

Early on in the second half, Jeremy Menez went through on goal after combining really well with Andrea Poli, but Neto was equal to the Frenchman’s strike.

Mati Fernandez had the chance to tie the game for La Viola, but his shot went well over the bar.

The Rossoneri showed no signs of stopping; Brazilian defender Alex could’ve doubled the scoreline, but his header was saved by the ever-present Neto.

Vincenzo Montella’s men got their equaliser only seconds later through Slovenian forward Josip Ilicic whose stinging left-footed shot which found the back of the net.

With twenty minutes remaining, El Shaarawy cut in from the left and had an attempt at goal only for it to take a deflection off Gonzalo Rodriguez.

Milan had a penalty appeal denied seven minutes later when Menez saw his shot get blocked in the penalty area, only for the referee to wave play on.

Fiorentina were on course to score their second goal when the ball was played into Khouma Babacar, but the Senegalese frontman failed to hit the target.

Juan Cuadrado tried his luck from distance with five minutes remaining, but his left-footed shot went over the bar.

Juan Vargas darted down the left-hand side in injury time in an attempt to win the game for La Viola, but his attempted cross went over Christian Abbiati’s bar.
