Ex-Roma striker Marco Delvecchio says Serie A has gotten worse in the years since the Italian has stopped playing.

With Serie A losing ground on European rivals, and some difficult campaigns in the Champions League and Europa League, Delvecchio offered insight into the league as well as the season so far.

“We need strong players to compete, the level has dropped since I played,” the 41-year-old told Radio Onda Libera.

Talking about Roma’s draw with Sampdoria, the former Azzurri striker believed it was a valuable point gained.

“The draw at the Marassi may be considered a good one, considering the form of Sampdoria and the fact that will be a tricky trip for everyone.

“It was a reaction to the Bayern Munich loss, where Garcia made a clear choice to gamble and win.

Delvecchio spoke about Juventus, after coach Massimiliano Allegri said the Bianconeri were not at full speed in their win over Palermo.

“Juventus continue gaining strength and determination, Allegri wants his players to sparkle but it is true that they were not in the best physical condition.”

The striker, who also had a spell at Udinese, said his old team have been the surprise of the season.

“Both Udinese and Sampdoria are full of surprises. Udinese more so, after the approach to the new season and possible departures, Andrea Stramaccioni has used his Inter experience positively.”

Another of his former teams, Inter, have struggled and with Massimo Moratti’s departure the coach Walter Mazzarri has come under fire.

“The Cesena victory will reassure the coach, but I do not know to what extent,” Delvecchio continued.

“Mazzarri is bickering with journalists too, and we will understand his future better after the next loss.”

Finally, Delvecchio was asked about ex-AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti and Mario Balotelli.

“Ancelotti is a great coach and knows how to manage players,” he stated.

“Balotelli has matured, but taken too long to do so, he has great potential but fails to make the big leap he needs to be a great technical player.”
