Luigi Di Biagio ItalyItaly U21 coach Luigi Di Biagio has argued that Serie A is getting better at giving young players the playing time needed to improve their development but there is still more work to be done.

The coach also spoke about his Azzurrini side’s fortunes after they secured a place in the finals of the Under-21 European Championships after progressing at Slovakia’s expense on October 14.

“We made an important step forwards [In qualifying for the European Championships], but we still haven’t secured a ticket for Rio [For the 2016 Olympics],” said Di Biagio to Sky Sport Italia.

“I’ve always thought that time was on our side, even in the first month when everybody took us for dead.

“We won a tough group and progressed from an intense playoff.”

Di Biagio also insisted that his young players are benefiting from the faith being put in them by more Serie A coaches although he still feels there is more work to be done in giving young players a chance in Italy.

“The amount of playing time the boys are getting has increased as Serie A coaches are getting braver in picking youth but there is still more work to be done, of that I am convinced.”
