Italian international Marco Di Vaio closed out a 21-year professional career in style on Saturday night when he scored in his final match with Major League Soccer’s Montreal Impact.
The 38-year old began his career in his home town, advancing through the Lazio youth system and scored more than 20 goals four times in a career that saw him play across Italy and Spain before concluding in Canada with 250 goals.
“I’m sad but it was a great day for me and my family,” Di Vaio said in a post-match press conference.
“Scoring goals has been my life. Here in Montreal, I’ve felt the affection from everyone in and out of the stadium; I’ve been very fortunate.”
Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo is part of a group that recently purchased Bologna FC and Di Vaio will return to the Rossoblu, a club he starred for four seasons, in a management capacity.
“To have Saputo in Bologna is incredible,” Di Vaio told Sky Sport Italia.
“I’m happy because we can build a better future for Bologna.”
