Draw A Bitter Pill To Swallow for Gasperini

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini was frustrated by Empoli’s controversial equaliser at the Stadio Ferraris on Monday night.

Massimo Maccarone’s header came off teammate Lorenzo Tonelli’s hand and into the net to cancel out Andrea Bertolacci’s first half strike to deny Genoa first back to back league wins since November 2013.

Gasperini could not hide his disbelief that neither the referee or his assistants saw what the 56-year-old thought was a clear infringement.

“According to the referee did not see anything wrong with the Empoli goal,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.

“If the had witness it they wouldn’t have given them the goal. Losing a goal from a handball, sorry, but reviewing the images I am not convinced that it has not seen.”

The former Inter and Palermo coach was also angry with a minority of Genoa supporters and, in his second spell at the Grifone, Gasperini sees as a negative cloud over the club.

“It’s a different environment from years ago, the fans lived in difficult times. This team though deserves to be supported and not only attacked.

“This is a team that most people appreciate, but you have to raise your voice against a minority.

“The relationship with the fans? I hope that anyone who loves Genoa has a different attitude, because those who want to destroy Genoa should not follow football , it’s the worst thing that can come from supporters.”
