Former Italian international Emiliano Bonazzoli has been handed a 10 match ban after being found guilty of making racist remarks to a referee during a Serie D match.

The former Parma and Sampdoria forward was playing for current team AC Este when he is alleged to have racially insulted Ramy Ibrahim Kamal Jouness, the match referee who is originally from Morocco.

The presiding Judge of the National Amateur League found Bonazzoli guilty of “making discriminatory expressions on the grounds of race, nationality and skin colour towards a match official.”

However, the striker has insisted he is innocent of the charges.

“I have no words, it is not right that I will now be labeled as a racist,” the 35 year old told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Este management are planning to appeal the judgement.
