Coach Vincenzo Montella insists that Fiorentina will go to AC Milan to try and win what will be a difficult game for his side.

After a mixed start to the Serie A season the Viola travel to the San Siro on Sunday night to face Filippo Inzaghi’s improving Rossoneri in a game between two rivals for Champions League qualification.

“I think it is as difficult as ever to win in Milan but we will try as always,” Montella told in his pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“Milan are proving to have quality players and they are growing.

“I do not think they are the only candidate for third place, there are four or five teams that are near and who will also play in the Europa League. From third to seventh place, the difference between the teams is minimal.

“Inzaghi is a new coach, the few times I have met him I thought he was curious and had a lot of enthusiasm.

“The fact that they do not play in the cups can lead to some advantage for Milan, but this should not be an excuse for us.”

Fiorentina lost their last league match 2-0 at home to Lazio last Sunday, but claimed an important 1-0 win at PAOK in the Europa League on Thursday thanks to a Juan Vargas goal, leading to criticism in some quarters that the Viola are more suited to European football than the domestic game.

“I think that so far Fiorentina have done great things in Italy. I like to get on any field with the mindset to win.

“On Thursday I liked our mentality from the first minutes and I hope to take that into tomorrow.

“From Thursday we take the result. There are many options [in the squad], but the players arrive in better condition. The boys are growing and generally the coach is always happy to have so many difficult choices.”

The 40-year-old was also happy to talk about the injuries within his squad and the form of certain players.

“[Mario] Gomez will train with the group next week, then it will take a while to get him in a game.

“[Khouma] Babacar is fine and has recovered.

“Juan [Cuadrado] can do better like how we are used to and to his full potential. I think he should be more decisive; he can do more in terms of quality and potential.

“Borja Valero reacted as a great professional, a champion. On Thursday he interpreted the game well.”

Fiorentina executive president Mario Cognigni recently told La Repubblica that plans for a new stadium were already in motion, but Montella insists he is just concentrating on football.

“Honestly, I read it in the newspaper, I do not know the details and I’m only thinking about the game tomorrow. I cannot say anything more, maybe you know more than me.

“The construction of the stadium leads to increase revenue and this can facilitate team building. These discussions are very ambitious.”
