Controversy swirls around the proposed construction of Fiorentina’s new €305 million stadium as planning has become embroiled with local Florentine politics.

Viola officials introduced plans to create a state-of-the-art European venue in July of this year without any government grants in the Mercafir area, where Florence’s largest fruit and vegetable markets are located.

A conference on Monday, October 27 may go a long way to establish the future of the proposed stadium and pessimism has set in amongst Viola fans as the Agofi, a powerful association of local wholesalers in Florence, were excluded from attending the meeting by Dario Nardella, the mayor of Florence.

A spokesman for Agofi spoke with Fiorentina.it and stated the association has not only been barred from the conference, they’ve not been granted the opportunity to view the findings and are being shut out by the Florentine mayor.

The Agofi spokesperson indicated their exclusion is due to Nardella’s assertion that Agofi and Mercafir’s interests are already represented with the attendance of Angelo Falchetti.

For their part, Viola officials have maintained they respect the rights of the community and feedback on the location of the project is subject to the relevant authorities and not the club itself.
