AC Milan director Umberto Gandini feels Keisuke Honda’s recent performances are a result of an understanding with coach Filippo Inzaghi.

The 28-year-old joined the Rossoneri in January this year, having been linked with a move to the side for a long period, when there was a high level of uncertainty around Clarence Seedorf.

“He arrived at Milan after a long courtship which lasted for months,” Gandini told Milan Channel.

“He had a great desire to join in the summer window but this didn’t happen for a number of reasons and he became a prisoner of his contract.

“He ended his season with CSKA Moscow in December 2013, went to Japan and then came here.

“He was not happy with his performances, the changes in coaching and felt his role was misunderstood.

“It was clear [at the end of the season] the only thing we could do was to leave him alone, let him go to the World Cup and enjoy his holidays.

“Japan were knocked out early so he had the chance to rest, he then learnt Italian and joined the teams tour to the USA as a completely different person.

“There was a spark on the tour, Pippo knew Keisuke in depth and his team-mates began to show more confidence in him.”
