Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has put his side’s magnificent 7-1 win over Roma down to their extensive preparation.

Ex-Germany captain Lahm, who lifted the World Cup in Brazil last summer, noted the importance of the Bayern coaches in setting the team up to beat Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

“The coach [Pep Guardiola] and the coaching staff prepared us for such a big game,” the 30-year-old told UEFA.com.

“We knew exactly how to play, in defence and attack, and the excellent performance tonight is because of this preparation.

Bayern raced into a 5-0 lead with a stunning first-half display in Rome, with Gervinho giving the home side a consolation before the scoring was rounded off by Xeridan Shaqiri 10 minutes from time.

Lahm, however, admitted his team took their foot off the pedal in the second half, allowing the Giallorossi to ruin their clean sheet.

“We relaxed a bit at 5-0, I think it is only human to do so.”

Bayern lead Group E with nine points from their opening three matches, with Roma still in second on four points after Manchester City through away a two-goal lead to draw with CSKA Moscow.
