Lazio’s Mauri to return against Cagliari after concerns about doping

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri has become available for the clash against Cagliari after concerns over drugs used to treat an illness have been allayed.

The 34 year old is back in training as he recovers from ill health, however the player will be out for the Biancocelesti’s match against Hellas Verona on Thursday evening.

Mauri was admitted to hospital with acute tonsillitis, and was administered the routine tonsillitis treatment involving several antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

The Italian National Olympic Committee’s [CONI] anti-doping wing CEFT has prevented the player’s return against Verona due to the apprehension that the drugs in his system, including an increased level of cortisone, may lead to him failing any anti-doping measures.

The club has however released a statement confirming that the midfielder will be available again by for the weekend match against Cagliari.

“Lazio communicate that footballer Stefano Mauri will return for selection for Lazio-Cagliari, on the occasion of the 10th day of the season,” read the club’s statement.
