Genoa defender Giovanni Marchese has insisted that this teammates are eager to get involved in helping the victims of the recent flooding, which hit the city for the second time in three years.

Torrential rain lashed the northern port over the weekend, leading to severe flooding which left one man dead and the streets of the old town buried in mud and debris.

The floods also led to the cancellation of Geona’s friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk, but the Rossoblu players are keen to return to action and also want to assist with the disaster relief effort.

“Our desire to return to the field is definitely very high, but there are more important things,” Marchese told Sky Sport Italia.

“There is the disaster suffered by Genoa and we hope that the city will soon blossom again.

“We will definitely do something. We’re talking with Luca [Antonelli], the captain, to prepare some initiatives to help the people affected.

“It’s a little hard to find the concentration after all this. Yet when you go out onto the field you need to be focused only on the game.”

Geona’s next fixture is Monday evening’s home tie against Empoli.
