Massimo Moratti has resigned as Inter’s honorary president bringing the curtain down on a 20-year association with the club.

The 69-year-old was given the title of honorary president by Erick Thohir, after the Indonesian businessman completed a deal to to the majority share of the club.

However, after just a year in his new role, Moratti has decided to step down along with his son Angelomario, Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetto,  the directors who held Moratti’s three seats on the club’s board.

“Internazionale Holding Srl, a company headed by Massimo Moratti and his sonsAngelomario Moratti and Giovanni Moratti, and holds 29.5 per cent of FcInternazionale Milano Spa communicates that today Angelomario Moratti, Rinaldo Ghelfi and Alberto Manzonetto have each individually resigned their posts as director at Fc Internazionale Milano Spa,” read the official press statement.

“Internazionale Holding Srl also announces that Massimo Moratti has today resigned as honorary President of Fc Internazionale Milano Spa kindly offered to him by Erick Thohir in November last year,” it added.

There had been talk in recent weeks that Thohir and Moratti did not see eye to eye over the management of the club, particularly the dealing of Inter’s accounts with regards to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

Moratti took over the club and presidency in 1995 and in an 18-year reign saw Inter collect five Scudetti, four Coppa Italias, four Supercoppa Italianas, the Champions League, UEFA Cup and Club World Cup.

He oversaw Inter’s greatest season under Jose Mourinho in 2009/10 when the club collected a treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League triumphs and became Europe’s dominant force.

The loss of such a momentous figure in the club’s history will likely lead to a period of uncertainty. Inter currently lie ninth after a disappointing start to the campaign and there has been mounting speculation over the future of coach Walter Mazzarri.

Inter host Saint Etienne in a Europa League Group F clash at the San Siro on Thursday night as they attempt to get their season back on track.
