Fiorentina welcomed Inter to the Artemio Franchi on Sunday night in Serie A and after the Milan based club did the double over the Viola last season Vincenzo Montella got revenge over Walter Mazzarri with a comprehensive win.

The match in Florence started with a bang with a stunning striker from Babacar on 7 minutes before Juan Cuadrado stepped up with his own submission for goal of the game ten minutes later, and Nenad Tomovic drove forward and added a third with 15 minutes left.

Fiorentina

Neto – 7.5 – Alert

Quiet night for the Brazilian stopper, however, when he was called into action late in the first-half he expertly tipped a difficult long range drive from Dodo round his left post to maintain a two-goal lead.

Nenad Tomovic – 7.5 – Exciting

Not content to concentrate on his defensive duties the 27-year-old provided constant support to Kurtic and provided several dangerous crosses from the right flank before surging through to score the third.

Gonzalo Rodriguez – 8 – Composed

Looked comfortable despite the obvious talents of Icardi and Osvaldo and always willing to drive out with the ball. An excellent moment of composure and skill within his own area on 26 minutes box nearly instigated a third goal.

Stefan Savic – 7 – Solid

Alongside his senior defensive partner helped restrict the effectiveness of Icardi and Osvaldo and rarely looked troubled.

Marcos Alonso – 7.5 – Impressive

His willingness to advance saw him often stationed in advanced areas of the Nerazzurri half and, like Tomovic on the right, rarely failed to deliver quality into the box.

Alberto Aquilani – 7 – Effective

Can sometimes go missing in ‘big’ games, but the Italian international was a constant outlet for his teammates and did not shirk his defensive duties. Could have scored had he not snatched at an early chance on the edge of the box.

David Pizarro – 7 – Tidy

Kept the Viola ticking over moving the ball quickly and efficiently around the pitch, even if some of his more adventurous efforts to find the attack regularly missed their targets.

Jasmin Kurtic – 7 – Determined

Somewhat surprisingly chosen ahead of Borja Valero, however, his energy down the right helped nullify the effectiveness of wing-back Dodo who was arguably Inter’s best player during the first-half.

Matias Fernandez – 7 – Valuable

Probably did not see as much of the ball as he would have liked, but did excellently to retain the ball before laying off to Cuadrado to double Fiorentina’s lead.

Juan Cuadrado – 8.5 – Lively

His energy helping Babacar lead the Viola attack was a key element of the victory at times seeming as though he was in two places at once. Took his goal excellently bending the effort round Handanovic into the bottom corner.

Babacar – 7.5 – Confident

After his stunning early strike gave Fiorentina the lead his effect on the match reduced slightly, however, he remained a constant option for his teammates as Inter began to dominate possession.

Substitutes

Federico Bernardeschi (Babacar 64 minutes) – 6.5 – Energetic

After replacing the impressive Babacar the youngster did exactly what was needed of him, pressing the Inter defensive and trying to force mistakes as the Viola saw out the win.

Juan Vargas (Fernandez 78 minutes) – 6.5 – Valuable

A slimmer Vargas came on to bring fresh legs and experience as the Viola saw out the victory and his job was even easier as he watched them net a third as he awaited making his entrance.

Joshua Brillante (Cuadrado 86 minutes) – N/A

Inter

Samir Handanovic – 6 – Unfortunate

Could do little to stop either of the early Fiorentina goals and for the rest of the night was rarely troubled by the hosts attack, but should have done much better for the third goal.

Andrea Ranocchia – 6 – Subdued

The Inter captain was rarely troubled by the Viola attack, although he could have closed Cuadrado down earlier for his goal, but failed to push the side forward from the back as opposite number Rodriguez was for the hosts.

Nemanja Vidic – 6 – Better

The biggest impact the Serbian made was with Rodriguez’ head when they clashed accidentally challenging for a corner, however, after a difficult start to Serie A gave a decent performance.

Juan Jesus – 6 – Strong

Solid when called into action but with Inter controlling possession for large parts of the game found life fairly comfortable although he may have been expected to halt the run of Tomovic for the third.

Danilo D’Ambrosio – 6 – Reliable

Regularly trying to work offensively down the Inter right, but with Dodo having marginally more success down the left was sometimes left a spectator.

Gary Medel – 6.5 – Tenacious

Went about his work in his usual tireless fashion, but with a slightly more advanced role as usually could not provide the creative spark required when forward.

Yann M’Vila – 5.5 – Quiet

Fiorentina were two-goals ahead before the Frenchman could put his defensive midfield attributes to good use for the Nerazzurri and for the rest of the match was largely a passenger.

Mateo Kovacic – 6 – Ineffectual

Failed to get the ball in areas where he could prise open the Fiorentina rearguard with his passing and when he did his aim was often missing.

Dodo –7 – Promising

Arguably Inter’s best player on the night providing a constant threat on the left wing be it with his crossing or his one long range drive that nearly reduced the deficit before the break and was surprisingly withdrawn.

Pablo Osvaldo – 6 – Anonymous

Little came off for the Argentinean-born Italian international failing to link effectively with his teammates and snatching at the chances that did come his way.

Mauro Icardi – 6 – Erratic

A snap shot shortly before Fiorentina doubled their lead looked as though the young striker was simply finding his aim, yet for the remainder of the match he failed to affect the match despite some intelligent movement.

Substitutes

Hernanes (Ranocchia 59 minutes) – 6 –Struggled

With so many underperforming the match was probably over for the visitors even with 30 minutes remaining, but the Brazilian still tried to probing his way past the Viola wall and went close with a free-kick.

Joel Obi (Dodo 67 minutes) – 5.5 – Invisible

In comparison with the man he replaced the Nigerian offered very little going forward and looked a wasted substitution by Mazzarri.

Rodrigo Palacio (Osvaldo 74 minutes) – 6 – Determined

Within minutes of his arrival it looked as though he had given Inter a lifeline only for the ball to have struck the side netting, after that there was little more than hopeful chasing from the striker.
