Sampdoria defender Alessio Romagnoli believes that his team possess the quality needed to earn a spot in Europe this season and admitted that joining La Samp was the right decision for him.

The unbeaten Blucerchiati currently sit in fourth place in the Serie A standings with 16 points and the 19-year-old is confident that the talented coach Sinisa Mihajlovic can lead the club to a top five finish this campaign.

Romagnoli spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about why he signed with Sampdoria and the club’s successful run this season thus far, while also praising Mihajlovic for his character and comparing the tactician to his previous coaches.

“Sampdoria was the best choice, it is the perfect environment for me,” said the Italy Under-21 international, who is currently at Il Doria on a season-long loan from Roma. “This is a great team and I have great team-mates here that give plenty of good advice.

“If I stayed at Roma I would have risked not playing a lot, but I was still complimented by some of my former team-mates when we face the Giallorossi on Saturday, like Daniele De Rossi and Francesco Totti.

“[Zdenek] Zeman, [Rudi] Garcia and Mihajlovic? They are three completely different characters but they remain united by their charisma and personalities.

“Europe? We believe it’s in our reach because we know that we are strong.

“I’m the new Alessandro Nesta? It’s a difficult comparison to live up to, but I’m very proud. Mihajlovic is fundamental to my growth, he has no problems putting younger players on the field and to confirm this, we have a winning mentality.

“The senior national team? It’s too early to say and I’m only focused on Sampdoria for now, but I do not limit myself.”
