Former AC Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi believes that Roma’s heavy loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League was due to the lack of pressing football in Italy.

The Giallorossi suffered a devastating 7-1 defeat to the Bavarians at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday and the former tactician admits that Bayern boss Pep Guardiola’s attacking formation was something that the capital city club were unprepared for.

Sacchi spoke to the press on Wednesday about why Roma had such a hard time competing with Bayern Munich and commented on Guardiola’s uniquely strong tactics that have led the German side to so much success as of late.

“Teams in Italy are not used to the constant pressure in their style of play,” said the 68-year-old, who has had successful stints as coach of the Rossoneri and the Italian national team in the past.

“So when they’re put up against the bigger clubs in Europe that play this way, they’re often faced with some difficulty.

“Roma lost the match because they lost the battle of pressing forward. I have to say that the tactics used by Guardiola were so insistent that perhaps you cannot even call them that.”
