Carpi kept pace with Bologna at the top of the Serie B table on Tuesday in an action-packed day where the referees were busy sending seven players off and handing out another 52 yellow cards. Serie-B-300x181

The Biancorossi overwhelmed Trapani 3-1 for their third straight victory, and fourth win in their last five, at the Stadio Cabassi as the Rossoverdi are now winless in their last seven and are pulled into the play out positions.

The match started fine for the visitors when Valeri Bojinov hit a shot which just grazed the post inside of five minutes but moments later Ternana’s afternoon would turn sour.

Andrea Sala earned an early exit in the seventh minute when he laid out Carpi’s Jerry Mbakogu at the top of the box and awarded the hosts a spot kick subsequently buried by Raffaele Bianco. Bojinov reacted angrily to being substituted off and the squad would miss his presence throughout the match.

The visitors found the road simply too hard to manage with 10 men and had difficulty getting the ball out of their own midfield for much of the match.

An inch-perfect cross from Fabrizio Poli was met by ex-Ternana player Fabio Concas who headed home his third goal of the season just past the half hour mark.

Carpi put the final nail in the coffin just before the stroke of half time when Mbakogu’s right-footer got past the substitute keeper for the Nigerian’s seventh goal of the season.

Ternana scored a consolation goal against the run of the play which provided little consolation to a Terni side searching for answers.

Frosinone has cooled off and are now two points off the pace after taking the lead and ultimately being pegged back 1-1 by Varese.

Inside of the half-hour mark Federico Dionisi dribbled past his defender to the byline and hit a beautiful cross which was met with an artful and athletic header by Davis Curiale to put the Canarini up.

Varese kept plugging away and were rewarded in the second half when Arturo Lupoli tucked in a rebound from a Leonardo Capezzi free kick to give the former Derby County man his fourth goal.

Livorno let a lead slip away and drew 1-1 to a 10-man Cittadella side in a match marred with eight yellow cards and plenty of late, crunching tackles.

The first half saw some terrific goal-mouth action including a mishit cross by Livorno’s Aniello Cutolo which hit the crossbar but the sides went into the break scoreless.

The visitors took the lead when Citta’s Alex Valentini made a great save from a free kick but his rebound fell to Federico Ceccherini, who despite protests of offside, tapped in the go-ahead.

The hosts overcame a red card to Michele Pellizzer and found the equalizer when Claudio Coralli somehow maintained possession in a swarm of Livorno defenders and played it back for Nicola Rigoni who drilled a shot from outside the box for his first goal of the season.

Catania appear to have righted the ship after a rough start and have climbed out of the cellar on the strength of their 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Virtus Entella.

A determined Bari hit a late equalizer to share the spoils with Pescara 1-1 at the Stadio San Nicola in a match marred with an ejection, seven yellow cards and 14 shots on target by the home side before finally being rewarded in the 88th minute with a goal.

Perugia’s Rodrigo Taddei missed his second penalty kick of the season in the 90th minute as the Grifoni settled for a scoreless draw with Avellino and have come off the boil in the last few weeks.
