Frosinone climbed to the top of a packed Serie B table, with the top 10 spots separated by a mere three points, after handing former leaders Perugia their second consecutive loss on Sunday afternoon at the Stadio Renato Curi. Serie-B

Perugia had the run of the play in the match’s initial stages debuting a 3-4-3 formation necessitated with the Grifoni missing key players due to injury and suspension.

The hosts were unfortunate to not have been awarded a penalty kick when Canarini defender Damiano Zanon grabbed Gianluca Comotto’s jersey and dragged him to the ground but the referee waived play on.

Frosinone keeper Massimo Zappino came up big twice in the first half fending off a beautifully struck volley from Lorenzo Del Prete and a right-footed shot from Michael Rabusic which seemed destined for the corner of the net.

The visitors awakened in the second half when Danilo Soddimo’s cross found two Frosinone players at the back post but Luca Pagani’s free header from four yards out missed the target.

Disaster struck in the 89th minute when Federico Dionisi mishit an incoming cross and the weak dribbler somehow made it through Perugia keeper Jan Koprivec’s hands. The Slovenian keeper did well to stop a penalty kick in stoppage time but it was too little too late for the Grifoni who dropped to fourth.

Avellino extended their unbeaten streak to six matches with a 1-0 victory over Carpi at the Stadio Partenio and are now tied on 15 with Frosinone and trail only on goal difference.

Torino on-loan keeper Alfred Gomis turned in a man of the match performance for the hosts turning aside three great scoring opportunities to deny Carpi at least a deserved draw.

The Lupi’s goal came at the half hour mark when Carpi keeper Gabriel misjudged a cross and came out too slowly and Gianmario Comi outjumped him at the far corner to head in the match winner.

Livorno crushed Trapani 6-0 to claim the third spot at the Stadio Picchi in the club’s largest margin of victory in their 99-year history.

It was complete annihilation from the Amaranto as Trapani not only leaked goals every quarter hour, their only shot on target was a weak header in the opening stages.

The hosts toyed with their guests and benefited from their dominance when Luca Siglardi ripped an unstoppable shot after 10 minutes.

The match effectively ended a few minutes later when Trapani’s Franceso Lo Bue tackled Daniele Vantaggiato in the area and Aniello Cutolo scored the first goal of his brace on the penalty kick.

Siglardi and Vantaggiato also scored two for the Amaranti as the Tuscan club aims a quick return to Serie A.

Bologna defeated Latina 2-1 at the Stadio Francioni as Latina continues to struggle, having only won once this season and dropping their second straight match with new coach Roberto Breda.

Pescara and Bari both registered impressive road victories over Crotone and Catania. The losers now both sit at the bottom of the table as the pair have only amassed six points each through the first eight matches.

Lanciano boxed Vicenza about recording a 4-0 victory at the Stadio Guido Biondi on the strength of Mame Thiam’s second half brace.
