Torino cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory on Thursday night at the Stadio Olimpico against HJK Helsinki in the Europa League.

Cristian Molinaro fired the Granata ahead in the first half, before Amauri added a second to put their team in pole position in Group B.

Torino controlled the game from the outset with Josef Martinez going close in the second minute when his effort was saved inside the near post by Helsinki goalkeeper Toni Doblas.

Captain Giuseppe Vives saw his long-range lofted attempt hit the crossbar on 17 minutes but Doblas looked to have it covered.

Helsinki failed to offer any real threat going forward, barely crossing the halfway line and only mustering two shots in the first half.

The Finnish champions wasted a good opportunity from a free kick on 27 minutes, after Demba Savage was adjudged to have committed a foul as he tried to meet Erfan Zeneli’s cross.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead through Amauri on the half hour mark only for his goal to be disallowed for a questionable offside decision as Zeneli appeared to be playing him onside.

The deadlock was finally broken two minutes later by Molinaro as he met Matteo Darmian’s cross from the byline and calmly finished his half-volley into the bottom left corner.

Helsinki almost forged a reply instantly as Savage volleyed high over the bar from a difficult chance as the Italian side went into the break with a narrow lead.

Carljohan Eriksson replaced Doblas in the Helsinki goal at half time following an injury picked up by the Spaniard in the opening stages of the game.

Molinaro looked to double his tally four minutes into the second half but sliced his shot wide from just inside the area.

Helsinki’s best chance of the night came from a low Robin Lod free-kick which almost snuck past Daniele Padelli’s near post.

Amauri sealed the points for the Granata on 52 minutes as he picked up the ball just outside the area and struck a low driven shot to Eriksson’s right. The former Juventus man then headed wide on 65 minutes and looked disappointed to be replaced by another ex-Juventus player, Fabio Quagliarella.

Torino saw out the remainder of the game, with the visitors struggling to make an impact, taking all three points and going top of Group B in the process as Club Brugge were held to a draw by FC Copenhagen.
