AC Milan striker Fernando Torres has revealed that it was his own decision to leave Chelsea over the summer and has insisted that his relationship with Jose Mourinho has always been great.

The 30-year-old had fallen out of favour at the Blues under Mourinho last season due to his poor form and many believed that his loan move to the Rossoneri was forced by the tactician, though the former Liverpool man admits that the transfer was a choice he made by himself due to his desire to play an important part at a new club.

Torres spoke to the London Evening Standard about his ongoing friendship with the Chelsea coach and why he decided to join AC Milan, while also commenting on the possibility of returning to Atletico Madrid in the future.

“Mourinho has always been good to me,” said the Spaniard, who arrived at the Diavolo on a two-year loan in August.

“The decision to leave was entirely personal because I needed something more, I needed to feel important. Mourinho and I have a great relationship we continue to talk to each other even today.

“Atletico Madrid? There wasn’t a real option to go to Atletico. Everyone speculated about this and I didn’t like it. I’ve said it many times, I won’t go to Atletico to retire.

“I’ll only go if I have the motivation to compete because the Atletico of today is very different from how it was when I was there. I follow them every weekend, returning there isn’t a real option.

“Spanish national team? I’d like to think that my cycle in Spain’s national team hasn’t ended yet.”
