Empoli midfielder Mirko Valdifiori was relieved to see his side take home a controversial 1-1 draw against Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Monday.

The player was quick to give due credit for a point earned, despite strong claims of a handball by Lorenzo Tonelli on the equalizing goal late in the game.

“Tonelli’s goal? I haven’t seen the replay, but the referee cancelled perhaps a fair goal by Maccarone,” he told Mediaset Premium after the match.

The 28-year old also shared his delight over the Azzurri’s run of form thus far in Serie A.

“It’s a great Empoli as we never give up even when we go in against teams such as Genoa.  We always try to impose our own game as we did in the second half.

“We devoted so much time in the week to dead-ball scenarios, it’s important to make goals from these situations.

“Most of us have never made the World Cup, it is right to enter the field with a smile and with the determination to do well.”
