Roma defender Federico Balzaretti believes the Giallorossi have emerged in a much stronger position to qualify for the knock out round despite their 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Gotze sent the capital club to their second straight defeat to the Germans, but the Italian was optimistic of making it through to the next round.

“Paradoxically, we’ve exited the match in a much stronger position, the standings make us smile,” he told Sky Sport Italia after the match with news that Manchester City had been defeated 2-1 by CSKA Moscow.

“City’s loss gives us a helping hand, but now we must win the home match against the Citizens.

“There must be balance in the analysis as Roma are a very strong side. Bayern are a side made up of martians, our real quality will emerge against City and CSKA Moscow.

“It must not be said that Roma can not do well. The Giallorossi have a valid squad that can be competitive in Italy and Europe.”
