Catania downed Latina 1-0 at the Stadio Angelo Massimino on Sunday night in Serie B, rooting Latina to the foot of the table while extending the Sicilians march back in the opposite direction.

A magical free-kick goal from Emanuele Calaio early on was enough to see Catania to victory despite a spirited battle from the visitors.

Latina started off on the front foot with two clear cut chances, the first coming when Francesco Valiani had a great strike volleying a cross that evaded a diving Alberto Frison but was saved off the line by Alexis Rolin.

On the ensuing corner Riccardo Brosco elevated for a header and his effort just grazed the crossbar, a chance that predicted a rough evening for the Lazio club.

At the 10-minute mark, the former Napoli hit man settled over a free kick from just outside 22 yards and curled a beautiful left-footer over the wall and past a diving Simone Farelli to score his fifth goal of the season.

The goal did not seem to rattle Roberto Breda’s men as they kept pushing and created a handful of opportunities including a 35-yard free kick from on-loan Roma midfielder Federico Viviani whose rocket stung the gloves of Frison.

The hosts worked a great move when Sebastian Leto barreled down the left channel and crossed a ball which was dummied expertly for Alessandro Rosina and although the former Torino man made solid contact, the shot was too central and easily saved by Farelli.

The half time whistle did little to change Latina’s fortunes. Early in the second half Rosina and Calaio worked a nifty combination at the top of the area to spring Gonzalo Escalante in on goal but Farelli came off his line and prevented the Rossoazzurri from doubling their lead.

Catania coach Giuseppe Sannino switched his side to a 3-5-2 to slow down Latina who seemed to be bossing around much of the play but couldn’t quite put the finishing touch to find the equalizer all evening.

The ploy worked as the Etnei are now three points away from a playoff spot and have won four of their last six matches.
Meanwhile, despite recent results improving under Breda, Latina have still yet to win away from home and are finding life much more difficult this season than in their maiden voyage in Serie B last year when the squad nearly gained a miraculous promotion to Serie A.
