Italian football enigma Paolo Di Canio has insisted that English football is now simply part of his persona, it is in his DNA.

The former West Ham striker has recently taken a job commentating on British football and has proclaimed his affection for his subject.

“To commentate comes naturally to me and English football is part of my DNA,” said Di Canio in an interview with Calcio 2000.

Di Canio first arrived on British shores in 1996 when he signed for Celtic from AC Milan and he has admitted that it was a massive change from what he was used to in Italy.

“I was warned about it but when you walk onto the pitch in Britain, everything is different.”

Furthermore, he was also asked as to why he chose to leave the Rossoneri after just winning the Scudetto the year before.

“I wanted to try something new and different,” he went on. “Our football may have been at the top but Celtic was something different.

“With Celtic I found a group of warriors.”

The former Lazio player was also keen to voice his opinion on the current state of  Italian football and was unafraid to criticise it.

“We try in every way to praise Italian football, when in reality, there is very little to praise,” he said.

“Italian football is experiencing a disastrous period.”

The 46 year old has also experienced what it’s like to manage a football team at the top level and has been asked upon whether he thinks he ever has a chance of coaching the Italian national side.

“I believe I have a one in a million chance of coaching the Azzurri. I have my own ideas and they will never change.”
