The Hellenic Football Federation have confirmed that the Italian Claudio Ranieri is no longer the coach of the Greece national side.

It had been widely reported that the 63-year-old old had been relieved of his duties after Greece’s 1-0 home defeat to the Faroe Islands on November 14.

A short statement on the Hellenic Football Federation’s official website confirmed that Ranieri and his coaching staff have been removed from their posts on the Greek bench and Kostas Tsanas has been appointed as interim coach.

It has been reported that the delay in confirming the news of Ranieri’s exit was due to concerns surrounding how much compensation he was due on his two-year contract that was worth €1.6 million.

Reports from Greece have claimed that FA president Giorgos Sarris persuaded Ranieri to forgo what he demanded in terms of compensation as it was the time to leave.

Ranieri was in charge of three defeats and one draw after replacing Fernando Santos after the 2014 World Cup and left Greece bottom of Group F, nine points behind leaders Romania.
