Fiorentina defeated Guimgamp at the Stade de Roudourou on Thursday night in the UEFA Europa League.

Early goals from Marko Marin and Khouma Babacar put the visitors ahead, before Claudio Beauvue made it 2-1 towards the end of the first half.

The visitors got off to a dream start when in the sixth minute they broke quickly up field with Khouma Babacar’s thundering shot parried by goalkeeper Jonas Lossl; however, Alberto Aquilani was first to react and squared the rebound for Marko Marin to slot the ball into the net and opening the scoring.

The Viola then doubled their lead only moments later when Juan Vargas brought down a long ball on the left wing and his low cross was tucked away with ease by Babacar whose run across the defence was not picked up.

Jeremy Pied found himself unmarked and on the end of a cross in the Fiorentina box, but the Guingamp man could achieve neither power nor direction on his header which went straight into the arms of Ciprian Tatarusanu.

As the first half wore on the home team continued to control the match with Sambou Yatabare looking particularly dangerous down the right, but his teammates continued to squander the opportunities he created.

A breakthrough looked inevitable and Guingamp’s persistence paid off in the 43rd minute when Sylvain Marveaux raced through on goal only to be brought down in the box by Jose Basanta, the Argentine received his marching orders for the foul while Claudio Beauvue tucked away the resulting penalty to set up an interesting second half.

The French outfit almost had their equaliser on 58 minutes when Beauvue was put through on goal by Marveaux, but the tricky Frenchman’s shot went the wrong side of the post.

It seemed the Viola had a bit of luck on their side when the hosts had a creditable penalty claim dismissed ten minutes from time when Ronnie Schwartz was bundled over in the box, this chance came only a few minutes after Moustapha Diallo had smashed a header off Tatarusanu’s cross bar.

Fiorentina spent the closing minutes of the game defending very deep as Guingamp tried desperately to level the score and while Diallo did finally put the ball in the visitor’s net in the 89th minute his celebrations were cut short by the linesman’s offside flag.

In the end the Viola did enough to protect their lead and secure the three points which sees them seal the top spot in Group K.
