Inter midfielder Fredy Guarin has stressed the importance of beating AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina ahead of this Sunday’s game at the San Siro, coach Roberto Mancini’s first in charge since returning to his former club.

The Nerazzurri sit in ninth place in the Serie A standings, one place and one point behind their city rivals, and Guarin sees three points as vital to their season.

“It [the derby] is so important because of everything it represents,” said the Colombian, speaking to SportMediaset.

“Because of all the history, the tradition first and foremost, however, it’s important because of the three points up for grabs.”

The 28-year-old went on to praise new coach Mancini, who has taken over following Walter Mazzarri’s sacking.

“First of all, I must thank him and admit that I really admire him as a coach,” said the midfielder.

“The praise he gave me has given me a real boost, and while I’ve always welcomed the responsibility of giving my all, his words have upped my motivation levels even further.

“For a player, feeling that you have the coach’s faith is incredibly important.

“We’ve got a big opportunity in front of us – it’s a new challenge with a top coach.”
