Former German international goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has been highly critical of Italian football following Roma’s home and away Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians were rampant in Rome last month as they humiliated Rudi Garcia’s side 7-1, while they completed the double over the Giallorossi with an assured 2-0 performance in Germany on Wednesday evening.

“Once German football would be left trembling in front of Italy, now the opposite is true,” asserted Kahn.

“After the draw many said that Bayern had been drawn in a group of iron. As if? I would never have imagined that Roma would be so bad. They came here with one thing in mind; not to win but to avoid being badly beaten again.

“What a disappointment,” continued the 45 year old.

“Italian football has been left behind by years. It has nothing to do with the modern game, especially with the quick pace. All teams in Italy play a slow and old-fashioned style with no dynamism. This is why Roma was not used to the rhythm of Bayern.”

Kahn spent 14 years at Bayern Munich and won the 2001 Champions League with the club.
