Lazio president Claudio Lotito has caused some controversy in Italy after making an apparently racist gaffe on live television.

Lotito made the gaffe when he was defending FIGC chief Carlo Tavecchio who was sanctioned by UEFA with a six month ban for his racist remarks about African players.

“[Carlo] Tavecchio has built two hospitals in Togo and he adopted some things,” said Lotito to interviewer Giulia Innocenzi on a talk show on La7.

Innocenzi then asked the Biancocelsti president to clarify what he had just said after the studio audience appeared shocked by his comments and some began to heckle Lotito for his use of the word ‘things’.

“He adopted three children,” was Lotito’s response.

Lotito then defended himself to the interviewer saying that his original comment had been misheard although the footage does reveal that he did say ‘things’.

Lazio are currently fifth in Serie A and will take on Juventus at home on November 22.
