Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli believes that the press will only write sensational stories about him in order to get people to read their media.

The enigmatic forward has been subject to a large number of stories highlighting his colourful life off the pitch and Balotelli feels that most of them are sensationalised solely to increase their sales.

“The press has to sell [papers] so they write stupid things or exaggerate stories,” he told Bein Sports.

“People don’t want to read that Mario is at home with his daughter, they want to read Mario has crashed his car.

“Everyone, including those who like me and those who don’t read what they write about me.”

The Italy international also discussed his recent lack of goals for Liverpool.

“I know for an attacker it is important to score, when I was younger I used to play for 20 minutes, I would score and the fans loved me.

“Now I am not scoring at Liverpool, but the fans have never failed to support me. When I start scoring again, it will be for them.”
