Roberto Mancini has refused to rule out returning to Inter, but insists that current coach Walter Mazzarri can still guide them to Champions League qualification.

Mancini has been out of work since leaving Galatasaray in the summer, and is keen to get back into work.

“I’m missing the work, but a rest does not hurt,” said the 49-year-old, speaking on MilanInterTV. “I will definitely be back next season to coach, perhaps even this year.

The former Lazio coach won three Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia, and two Supercoppa Italiana trophies in a four-year spell with the Nerazzurri, and with the current coach under pressure he has been linked with a return to the San Siro.

“I had an extraordinary experience at Inter; we won a lot together.

“I do not know what will happen. It’s hard to talk now. From now until next summer, anything can happen, and until then Inter have a good coach.”

Recent speculation has suggested that Mazzarri could be relieved of his duties with the Nerazzurri after a run of only two wins in their last six matches leaving the club sat in ninth-place in Serie A, but Mancini believes they can turn it around.

“It’s hard to judge from the outside, but I think Inter have a good team and I believe that they can fight for the Champions League. They are not very far away from third place.”

Mancini’s assistant coach at Inter and former teammate at Sampdoria and Lazio, Sinisa Mihajlovic, is another man who has been tipped to replace Mazzarri after an impressive start to the season coaching Sampdoria.

“Mihajlovic has now gained a lot of experience and is doing very well at Sampdoria, I think he is quite ready for Inter.”

“Beyond that, I think that the fans should always be close to the team, Inter fans are very important and they can help in times of trouble. They must have confidence.”
